2026 Jubilee of St Francis of Assisi
Commemoration of the Eighth Centenary of the death of St Francis
Commemorating the Eighth Centenary of the death of St Francis in 1226, Pope Leo XIV has declared a Jubilee year of St Francis of Assisi for 2026!
To celebrate this occasion, Pope Leo also announced that the relics of St Francis were to be displayed in the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi from the 22nd of February to the 22nd of March, marking the first time IN HISTORY that his relics were exposed for public veneration since his death.
A Plenary Indulgence (CCC 1471) marks the Jubilee of St Francis and is available from 10.1.2026 to 10.1.2027. The requirements for the indulgence are below.
Indulgence Requirements
A) Detachment from sin.
B) Visiting as a pilgrim i) a Franciscan conventual Church, or ii) a place of worship named after St Francis, or iii) a place connected to him for any reason (e.g. ministered by Franciscans).
C) Spending time in meditation to foster Christian charity and an authentic desire for peace among people, concluding with the Our Father, the Creed and invocations of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Francis, St Clare and all saints of the Franciscan family.
D) Sacramentally confessing sins (within 8 days before or after visiting the Church).
E) Devoutly receiving Holy Communion (within 8 days b/a).
F) Praying for the intentions of our Holy Father Pope Leo XIV (within 8 days b/a).
